From the streets of Pittsburgh to the track of Berlin

October 8, 2013 | By | No Comments

This is AWESOME! “Zak’s racing career began as a courier in Pittsburgh, competing in local courier races, twice winning the North American Cycle Courier “Track King” title. He segued into racing on the velodrome and worked his way through the ranks quickly. 2011 saw Zak winning the Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge points race, the biggest race of the year at his home track, defeating arch rival Jame Carney. At the Fixed Gear Classic in Blaine, MN, Zak and long time madison partner Dan Harm won the madison, competing against long time Six Day pro Franco Marvulli. Zak still works occasionally as a courier, but his main focus is on moving up to the next level in his racing career. His dream until a year ago? Racing pro six days in Europe. Then in 2013 the all-but-forgotten art of steher racing had a little yankee flavour added during the 102nd Berlin Six Day when reining US omnium champion Zak Kovalcik competed in the high-speed niche event. And we’ve been lucky enough to follow him during this amazing week in Berlin.” MET Helmets.

Condor to supply London’s New Velopark

July 11, 2013 | By | No Comments

Condor Cycles announced today that they will supply a range of track, road and mountain bicycles for use in the new Lee Valley VeloPark, site of the 2012 London games and velodrome, which is planned to open in early 2014. This is perfect match, a legendary bike brand and shop from London supplying the Olympic velodrome in London.

The Olympic Park in Stratford is currently under transformation, with the London Velodrome, nicknamed the Pringle, set at the heart of a new venue to be known as the Velopark. It is intended the Velopark will be used by the local community, clubs and elite athletes and run by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. The site will include a reconfigured BMX track, mountain bike trial, new road cycle circuit, bike hire and cycle workshop facilities.

Condor won a three year contract to supply bicycles to the Velopark. The bicycle frames for use in the velodrome will all be made by hand in Italy and built in London by Condor mechanics. The VeloPark users will also ride Condor road bikes and like all the bicycle frames made by Condor, the product will be made by hand in Italy before being turned into a ride-able machine at Condor’s build facility in East London. The bicycles have been designed in-house by Condor’s design team and use specially selected Columbus aluminium triple butted tubing, heat treated for additional tensile strength.

Wednesday Night Kissena Sessions.

June 13, 2013 | By | No Comments

This is the 8th week of the Kissena sessions and my 3rd roll out on the Queens based track. In a recent round-up of active Velodromes’ in the US she was titled ‘big bumpy’. It’s certainly and interesting place, with the buzz of RC planes above us and the trippy tinkle from the Ice Cream Van it makes for interesting racing. I am though extremely grateful to have the chance to race track when out here and for all the efforts from everyone on a wednesday night. There’s a great atmosphere at the track with a real mix of people, Mattie did a great job of capturing the down-time between races which is all part of the night.
